Midtown Mall Remains Closed Following Electrical Fire

WORCESTER, MA. — Businesses at Worcester’s Midtown Mall remain shuttered nearly a week after an electrical fire broke out on the building’s roof, leaving the complex without power.

Jay Grey, owner of Odd by Worcester Brewing, Broth, and Mall Rats Arcade, said the mall’s sprinkler system caused extensive damage to his storefronts. Grey described a total loss of beer and food inventory, as well as significant damage to brewing and kitchen equipment. He employs roughly 20 staff members across his three businesses and said he is doing his best to stay positive despite the setback.

“We’re trying to keep our faith. We’re very lucky to have another business in Maine, and we’re grateful for the support from the city of Worcester,” Grey said. “The staff, other business owners, and I are definitely feeling defeated. We’ve been working hard to revitalize downtown Worcester and make this place something special. When something like this happens, it’s tough to keep going.”

Grey noted that the mall owner is actively working with tenants to address the situation. Meanwhile, the Worcester Fire Department told Spectrum News 1 this week that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
