WORCESTER, MA. — The Worcester Veterans Day parade returned to the streets this year, honoring those who have served the nation with growing participation and community support. Starting on Grove Street outside Veterans Inc., the parade marched down Main Street, concluding at City Hall in a show of gratitude and remembrance.
Community Support and Celebration
The day began with a well-attended pancake breakfast at Veterans Inc., a local hub providing support for veterans. Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Estrada highlighted the importance of the organization, saying, “Veterans Inc. is a very good place for all the veterans that need it, and they need the help.”
Worcester’s Director of Veterans’ Services, Dr. Joe Robinson, emphasized the parade’s mission: to honor veterans while growing community engagement. “Bigger and better every year has been our mission. This year, we had 60 organizations sign up for the parade,” Robinson said. “Two years ago, we had 17, then 32 last year, and now 60.”
Marching to Remember
Leading the parade, Gunnery Sergeant Estrada and fellow marines underscored the meaning of Veterans Day. “We do this every year to remind people what Veterans Day is about — to remember all of us and those still abroad in service,” Estrada said.
Robinson added, “If our veterans could sustain the cold during war, then we surely can endure some cold to honor them marching in a parade.”
Veterans Reflect on Service
For local veterans, the day carries deep personal significance. Estrada said, “Veterans Day is to support and defend everyone that has served — now, before, and after.” Dr. Robinson reflected on the sacrifices made: “Some went off to war and never returned. Some of us came back. It’s a great honor and respect to every person who served, especially Marines, considering our birthday was yesterday.”
Acts of Kindness and Ongoing Support
Estrada encouraged simple acts of gratitude: “Go up and thank a veteran, saying, ‘Thank you very much for your service.’” He also highlighted community programs, such as pancake breakfasts, Toys for Tots, and other outreach efforts.
Following Veterans Day, Worcester’s Office of Veterans’ Services will continue supporting the Toys for Tots drive, already underway across Worcester County. These initiatives reflect the community’s ongoing commitment to honoring and assisting those who served.
