WORCESTER, Mass. — City officials and regional development organizations have secured nearly $5 million in state funding to support targeted infrastructure improvements, downtown revitalization, and industrial growth across Worcester.
The $4.95 million allocation comes from Massachusetts’ fiscal year 2027 Community One Stop for Growth program, an initiative designed to spur local economic development and help municipalities unlock additional private investment. Announcement of the funding was confirmed by state Sen. Michael Moore’s office following a broader statewide rollout.
The awarded funds will be split across four key municipal projects:
-
Denholm Building Demolition ($3 Million): The largest portion of the grant package will go toward tearing down the long-vacant Denholm Building. Clearing the structure will open up a 1.2-acre, shovel-ready parcel aimed at attracting new downtown development.
-
North Side Manufacturing Infrastructure ($1.65 Million): Partnering with New Garden Park Inc., the city will utilize these funds to rebuild an existing roadway and lay foundational utility infrastructure capable of supporting up to 1 million square feet of new manufacturing capacity on Worcester’s north side.
-
Wayfinding & Downtown Signage ($250,000): In collaboration with the Downtown Worcester Business Improvement District, the city will purchase and install four interactive digital navigation kiosks alongside 88 new street banners to enhance visitor mobility and commercial foot traffic.
-
Commercial Storefront Revitalization ($50,000): A targeted micro-grant aimed at helping fill persistent vacancies within designated Commercial Area Revitalization Districts.
The local awards are part of a massive $330 million state distribution spanning over 200 communities across the Commonwealth. State officials anticipate the public funds could catalyze roughly $24.6 billion in broader private market investment statewide.
Highlighting the timing of the grant, Sen. Moore emphasized that public investment in municipal infrastructure serves as a critical stabilization tool during periods of economic uncertainty and elevated inflation, helping advance long-term housing and commercial goals throughout the region.
