SHREWSBURY, MA — Shrewsbury police are stepping up efforts to prevent impaired driving this December. The Shrewsbury Police Department announced extra officers will be on patrol to identify drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The department received $38,000 in grant funding through the FY26 Municipal Road Safety Grant Program. Most of this funding will go toward additional officers focused solely on enforcement campaigns, including the “Winter Impaired Driving Campaign” this month. These officers will supplement regular patrols, concentrating entirely on impaired driving prevention.
“We remain committed to ensuring everyone can enjoy a safe and happy holiday season,” the Shrewsbury Police Department said in a statement. “Our goal is to prevent unnecessary crashes and injuries caused by impaired driving. Please drive responsibly and never operate a vehicle while impaired.”
OUI enforcement in Shrewsbury is part of a broader effort to keep roads safe during peak travel times. Extra patrols will monitor major routes and intersections, aiming to reduce accidents linked to alcohol or drug use behind the wheel.
Drivers are reminded to plan ahead if consuming alcohol, designate a sober driver, or use ride-share services. With OUI enforcement in Shrewsbury increasing this December, authorities hope to protect residents and visitors during the busy holiday season.
